Ice dyeing is one of the easiest and most rewarding dyeing techniques you can try. The process is simple: first, soak your cotton fabric in a soda ash solution, then wring it out and tie, fold, or scrunch it as you like. Place the prepared fabric in a colander, cover it with ice or snow, and sprinkle dye powder over the top. Let the ice melt slowly overnight in a warm spot, then rinse and wash the fabric 24–48 hours later.

As the ice melts, it causes the blended dye pigments to “split” and separate, creating stunning crystalline patterns with an array of distinct colours, like a kaleidoscope on fabric. Picture the folds of the fabric like a mountain range: the peaks absorb dye differently than the valleys, revealing beautiful layers and unexpected colour combinations.
