Ice dyeing is one of the most accessible and visually stunning dyeing techniques out there. The process is simple yet magical: begin by soaking your cotton fabric in a soda ash solution, then wring it out and shape it—fold, twist, scrunch, or tie it however you like. Place the prepared fabric in a colander or over a rack, cover it with ice or snow, and sprinkle powdered dye over the top.

As the ice melts slowly—ideally overnight in a warm environment—it pulls the dye through the fabric, causing the blended colours to “split” and separate into vibrant, crystalline patterns. The result is a kaleidoscope of colour, with intricate variations depending on how the fabric is positioned. Think of it like a miniature landscape: the high points absorb colour differently than the low valleys, creating a stunning natural gradient and depth.
